The NEWORKer

This newsletter prepared for the information of members and those involved in the activities of the NEWORK Centre.

It is not intended that this Newsletter be a regular publication or one of regular size. It will be prepared as and when material is available.

"Changing Times" is another publication of the Work and Age Trust and is directed to a much wider audience. Obviously there will be an overlap. As members, you will receive a copy of "Changing Times" as well.

Membership of NEWORK

The Trustees see membership of NEWORK being attractive to at least three groups. Not necessarily in order -

  • the first is those who wish to support the aims, vision, philosophy of the trust in its role of advocacy and education of the public, government, local authorities, business organisations, employee unions and the general public where the trust advocates for and on behalf of NEWORKers and portfolio workers.
  • the second group is the NEWORK/portfolio practitioners. Those people who are walking the talk and operating outside the organisation.
  • and the third group is those who are exploring the way forward, those who are investigating or "putting their toe in the water" to see if NEWORKer/Portfolio working is for them.

Membership is for these people and others (individuals and organisations) who are have an empathy with the aims and objectives of the Work and Age Trust and the activities of the NEWORK Centre.

It is your Centre and as members, you are invited to use it and to expand its support.

Membership is by way of a donation. We have suggested $50 as being an appropriate level of support. As members we meet others who are outside the organisation. How about inviting them to support the Centre by becoming a member.

Annual Meeting

The 2003 Annual General Meeting was held on 7 August 2003.

The meeting was well attended. The draft minutes can be found on the website from the Work & Age Trust Side Bar link. The meeting

  • received the chairperson's report
  • received and passed the yearly accounts
  • re-appointed Gordon Arnold as the Trust's financial auditor

The meeting also looked at and discussed the "Future Directions" paper. The ideas for the change of direction were supported. To clarify a couple of issues raised. The focus of the trust would be in two strands - developing networks that can use the premises and being involved in public education and advocacy. This does present a change in that the members would not have the same access to the use of the office equipment such as the computer. Members would be able to use the room for meetings and the like (booking through the website).

It was intended that the Trust would be implementing its role in the advocacy area in two ways. One is the traditional manner of meetings, submissions, lobbying in person etc. we would also use the website as a means of advocating for NEWORKers.

A future option to alter the name of the Trust was raised but it is not intended to take any action at this time.

Website

The NEWORK website has been revamped and was launched at the Annual General meeting held on 7 August 2003.

Much of the information on the earlier site has been retained but a lot more has been added. We propose that the website be used much more as an advocacy tool presenting issues and through the new discussion centre enabling members and the general public post their views as a means of sharing, and clarifying matters of import to NEWORKers and portfolio workers generally.

Trust Vision

Our vision as a Trust is to have people of all ages building strong communities through meaningful work.

As the Trust moves forward, NEWORKers and portfolio workers contribute to the building of these strong communities in new ways. Have a look at "NEWORK and What we are About" page that is being developed where we see our members acting in new ways as including

Thursday Lunches

Our lunchtime meetings are about meeting others. Most importantly lunching with others who have seen the benefit of working "outside the organisation" through sharing experience and practical learning from others who are working on their own

There is a gathering each Thursday Lunchtime - this weekly gathering is a serendipitous event - one that just happens. The subject matter around the table depends on who is there. The environment is non-threatening and an opportunity to share if you are just setting out on the portfolio way.

These lunches happen between 12.30 2pm @ The NEWORK Office, Level 3 Community House 84 Willis Street, Wellington. There is no need to book, just come along. Bring a friend
