BRIONY M. COOTE: FREELANCE PUBLIC HISTORIAN
Briony M. Coote graduated with a Masters in Public History from Victoria University Wellington in 2004 and now works as a freelance public historian. Briony contracts to research and write up projects on organisations and places. Recent projects have included a contract with Hutt City Council to research and write a tourist pamphlet on Percy’s Scenic Reserve and background research for upcoming exhibitions with the Petone Settlers Museum.
Briony’s first publication, a local history on war cenotaphs A Tale of Two Cenotaphs, will be published with the Lower Hutt Historical Society for Anzac Day 2005. Briony has also written histories on the voluntary organisation New Zealand Futures Trust and the peace organisation, Scientists against Nuclear Arms.
Briony’s topics of interest include: Organisations within the Peace Movement of New Zealand, social histories, researching heritage buildings, war cenotaphs and conservation. Briony has a background in horticulture as well as history, and has been working as a freelance gardener for over ten years. Briony is also a member of Toastmasters Speechcraft Club and has experience in public speaking.
